ABS engineering plastics – increasingly close to our life

ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene Styrene copolymers) chemical name: acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer. It is a kind of alloy plastic made of the above three materials according to different proportions. It has many characteristics, such as high strength, good toughness, easy processing and molding. It is the plastic variety with the largest production and use at present. Today, we will briefly introduce ABS engineering plastics.

ABS molecular formula:(C8H8·C4H6·C3H3N)x

Effects of three materials on ABS alloy:

  1. acrylonitrile makes ABS have good rigidity, hardness, oil resistance, corrosion resistance and good coloring and electroplating properties.
  2. butadiene makes ABS have high toughness, cold resistance and impact strength.
  3. besides good rigidity and hardness, Styrene ABS has better gloss and processing fluidity.

Physical properties of ABS

  1. Density: 1.05g/cm3
  2. Forming shrinkage: 0.4-0.7%
  3. Hot melt temperature: 200-240 ℃
  4. Drying condition: 80-90 ℃, time more than 2 hours

Chemical properties of ABS

1. General performance

Plastic ABS is non-toxic and tasteless, and is ivory translucent, or transparent particles or powder. The density is 1.05-1.18g/ cm 3, the shrinkage is 0.4%-0.7%, the elastic modulus is 2gpa, the hygroscopicity is <1%, and it will undergo thermal decomposition at 250 ℃.

2. Mechanical properties

Plastic ABS has excellent mechanical properties and excellent impact strength. It can be used at very low temperatures. Plastic ABS has excellent wear resistance, good dimensional stability and oil resistance. It can be used for bearings under medium load and low speed. The creep resistance of ABS is larger than that of PSF and PC, but smaller than that of PA and POM.

3. Thermal properties

The thermal deformation temperature of plastic ABS is 93-118 ℃, and the product can be increased by about 10 ℃ after annealing. ABS can still show certain toughness at -40 ℃ and can be used in the temperature range of -40-60 ℃.

4. Electrical performance

Plastic ABS has good electrical insulation and is almost free from the influence of temperature, humidity and frequency. It can be used in most environments.

5. Environmental performance

Plastic ABS is not affected by water, inorganic salts, alkalis and various acids, but can be dissolved in ketones, aldehydes and chlorinated hydrocarbons. It will produce stress cracking when eroded by glacial acetic acid and vegetable oil. ABS has poor weather resistance and is easy to degrade under the action of ultraviolet light. After half a year outdoor, the impact strength decreased by half.

Main applications of ABS

ABS has good mechanical properties and formability, and has been widely used in various articles in life, such as:

  1. Common mechanical parts: mainly small parts of common appliances, such as gears and bearings with low requirements. 2. Machine parts: instrument parts for motors and other equipment in ordinary environment.
  2. Low strength auto parts and: Auto grille, heater, air conditioning duct, headlight spotlight, reflector cover, wheel trim cover, armrest, fender, etc.
  3. Home appliance components: refrigerator shelves, shelves, shelves, evaporators, fan blades, linings, TV and tape recorder shells, washing machine water wheels, air conditioner shells, telephone shells, etc.
  4. Children’s toys: Children’s toys are generally made of ABS, and high-end products may use engineering plastics with higher requirements.
Main applications of ABS

Preparation of ABS engineering plastic pellets

Leading to twin screw extruder is the best choice. The length diameter ratio is 40:1 or 44:1. The pellets have smooth surface and good performance. Twin screw extruder is an important link in the production of ABS pellets.
