Cast Copper Heater for Extruder Barrels

The cast copper heater for extruder barrels provides fast, uniform, and reliable heating for segmented temperature control in twin-screw extruders. Made from high-conductivity copper, it ensures even heat transfer, quick thermal response, and long service life, supporting precise material melting and stable extrusion across multiple barrel zones.

Cast Copper Heater for Extruder Barrels

The temperature control system primarily consists of heating devices, cooling devices, and the temperature control system itself. Heating devices generally use cast copper heaters.

The barrel of a twin-screw extruder is typically divided into multiple independent temperature control zones (e.g., feeding section, melting section, mixing section, venting section, metering section). Each zone requires an independent cast copper heater (and cooling system) to achieve precise segmented temperature control. Generally, the first barrel section is an exception; heaters are installed on all other barrel sections. Closed barrels have heaters installed on all four sides, while closed-side feed barrels only have heaters installed on three sides.

Advantages:

Exceptional Thermal Conductivity: Copper has one of the highest thermal conductivity coefficients (~400 W/m·K) among commonly used engineering metals. This means it can transfer heat generated by the resistance wire extremely quickly and efficiently across the entire surface of the heating block to the barrel.

Extremely High Thermal Uniformity: Benefiting from copper’s excellent thermal conductivity, the temperature distribution across the heater surface (and the surface in contact with the barrel) is very uniform. This is crucial for the extrusion process, as the material needs to be heated and melted uniformly along the entire barrel length to avoid localized overheating (causing degradation) or localized underheating (causing poor plasticization).

Good Thermal Responsiveness: Fast thermal conductivity also means a quick response to temperature control commands. When the control system issues a command, the cast copper heater can heat up or cool down (combined with the cooling system) faster, contributing to more precise and stable temperature control.

Durability and Longevity: Copper is less prone to oxidation during heating, and the resistance wire is completely encapsulated and sealed within the copper, isolating it from air and moisture. This effectively prevents oxidation and corrosion, extending the lifespan of both the heating wire and the entire heater. Its robust structure also provides resistance to mechanical shock.
