Hinged Type Quick-Opening Strand Die

Connected to the last section of the extruder barrel, it is usually used to extrude the mixed materials into strips, facilitating subsequent cooling and granulation processes. It is widely applied in the field of rubber and plastic processing.

Hinged Type Quick-Opening Strand Die

Hinged Type Quick-Opening Strand Die

The hinge quick-opening head of an extruder is mainly composed of the following components, designed for efficient operation and quick maintenance:

Cooling Head

  • Features an extrusion flow channel, typically consisting of a transition section with a gradually converging cross-section and a downward-inclined extrusion section with a constant cross-section.
  • May have a downward-sloping installation bevel on the outer side for mounting the strand die.
  • Equipped with heating devices (usually installed around all sides except the front and rear ends) to maintain optimal material temperature.

Strand Die/Mould

  • Positioned at the outlet of the cooling head’s extrusion flow channel, mounted on the installation bevel of the cooling head.
  • Functions to extrude the material passing through the flow channel into strips.

Strand Die Mould

Transition Body

  • Connected to the extruder’s barrel, with an internal flow channel that communicates with the barrel’s inner cavity.
  • Guides the material from the barrel to the cooling head.

Porous Plate

  • Installed between the cooling head and transition body, equipped with through holes for material passage and a filter screen for filtration.
  • Must be aligned with the flow channels of the transition body and cooling head to ensure smooth material flow; fixed by being clamped and held in place between the transition body and cooling head, or by being fastened with bolts to the transition body or the cooling head.

Hinge Mechanism

Comprises a hinge base, hinge base bolts, mould bolts, and multiple hinge type connecting rods:

  • The hinge base is fixed on the transition body with bolts, and the hinge base bolts are mounted on it.
  • Mould bolts are installed on the cooling head (both can be positioned above or below).
  • Multiple mutually hinged connecting rods link the hinge base bolts and mould bolts, enabling the cooling head to open and close quickly.

Tow Types Of Hinge Quick-Opening Head

Four-hinge Quick-opening Head

Four-hinge Quick-opening Head

The four-hinge quick-opening head features a large filtration area and a short flow channel. It can be used for small-scale material recovery without the need for a hydraulic screen changer. Besides, it offers more advantages when making color masterbatches or engineering plastics, especially for materials that require a short flow channel, such as engineering plastics.

Disadvantage: There is an empty space in the middle of the front and rear splints of the head, making it impossible to install the heater, so that it is difficult to increase the temperature.

Double-hinge Quick-opening Head

Double-hinge Quick-opening Head

The double-hinged quick-opening head is fixed with two bolts on both middle left and right sides of the hinge base. It is only suitable for small machines such as extruders with a screw diameter of 20/16mm.

Disadvantage: The hinge base bolts of this head are not like those of the four-hinge quick-opening head, which are fixed at four corners. Instead, they are only fixed on the left and right sides. Therefore, the material is prone to leakage from both the upper and lower positions.

Application

The hinge type quick-opening head for extruders is widely used in the following fields:

Plastic Processing Industry

Plastic Pelletizing: color masterbatches, engineering plastics, high filling plastics, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE/TPV/TPU/TPR), degradable materials
Enables quick screen changing without prolonged shutdowns, maintaining production continuity and efficiency. It also facilitates cleaning of residual plastic in the head to prevent material from deteriorating or affecting the product quality due to their prolonged stay in the die head.

Rubber Processing Field

  • For producing rubber extrudates (e.g., hoses, belts, seals), it allows quick screen replacement and head cleaning to prevent impurities from affecting product quality.
  • Enables flexible switching between different rubber product models by rapidly changing molds, enhancing production efficiency.

Other Polymer Material Processing

In R&D and small-batch production of new polymer materials, it helps researchers quickly replace head components to test different formulations and processes, accelerating the R&D cycle.
