What Is PEEK

PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is a semi-crystalline polymer with excellent comprehensive properties of special engineering plastics. It has a high melting point (343 °C) and excellent mechanical properties, and is also very biocompatible, making it the hottest 3D printing material currently studied.

PEEK belongs to the polyketone polymer (PAEK) family, and its family members also include PEK, PEEKK, PEKK or PEKEKK. In traditional manufacturing, PEEK-based modules have been adopted by many industries and are widely recognized.


1. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Has The Following Characteristics

High temperature resistance: PEEK has a high glass transition temperature (Tg=143°C) and melting point (Tm=334°C), its load heat deflection temperature is up to 316°C, long-term use temperature is 260°C, and instantaneous use temperature can reach 300°C.

Self-lubrication: PEEK has good sliding characteristics, suitable for occasions with strict requirements for low friction coefficient and wear resistance, especially PEEK modified with carbon fiber, graphite, PTFE has excellent wear resistance.

Corrosion resistance: PEEK is insoluble in any solvent except concentrated sulfuric acid and has high chemical stability.

Flame retardant: PEEK is self-extinguishing, even without any flame retardant, it can reach the UL standard of 94V-0 level.

Easy to processing: Due to the good high-temperature fluidity and high thermal decomposition temperature of PEEK, it can be processed by a variety of methods, such as injection molding, extrusion molding, compression molding and melt spinning.

Mechanical properties: PEEK has good toughness and rigidity, and it has excellent fatigue resistance comparable to alloy materials.

Electrical properties: PEEK has high volume resistivity and surface resistivity, and can withstand the AC potential field strength of various frequencies under a wide range of temperatures and environmental changes, and maintain good insulation performance.

Hydrolysis resistance: The resin and its composite materials are not chemically affected by water and high-pressure water vapor, and can be used continuously in high-temperature and high-pressure steam or water environments to maintain good mechanical properties.

Weatherability: Excellent weatherability, polymers can be used to manufacture components that require demanding work environments or require frequent sterilization treatments.

2. The Application Field Of PEEK

Due to its excellent comprehensive properties, PEEK can replace traditional materials such as metals and ceramics in many special fields, making it one of the hottest high-performance engineering plastics today, which is mainly used in aerospace, automotive industry, electronic and electrical and medical machinery and other fields.

  • Automobile and other transportation machinery fields

The growth of PEEK resin in the European market, especially in the auto parts market, is the most rapid growth, especially the engine surrounding parts, transmission parts, steering parts, etc., PEEK plastic is selected instead of some traditional high-value metals as manufacturing materials. As the automotive industry adapts to miniaturization, lightweighting, and cost reduction, the demand for PEEK resins will continue to grow.

  • IT manufacturing industry

Semiconductor manufacturing and the electrical and electronic industry are expected to be another growth area for PEEK resin applications. In the semiconductor industry, in order to achieve high functionality and low cost, the size of silicon wafers is larger, the manufacturing technology is more advanced, and low dust, low gas discharge, low ion dissolution, and low water absorption are special requirements for various equipment materials in the semiconductor manufacturing process, which will be where PEEK resin comes into play.

  • In the field of office machinery parts

When PEEK resin is used instead of metal for the separation claws of photocopiers, special heat-resistant bearings, chains, gears, etc., the parts can be lightweight, fatigue-resistant, and oil-free lubrication.

  • Wire coating field

The PEEK coating has good flame retardancy, and without adding any flame retardant, its flame retardant level can reach UL94 V-0 level. PEEK resin also has the advantages of peel resistance and radiation resistance, so it is used in special wires in military and nuclear energy related fields.

  • Plates, bars and other fields

In the process of application of PEEK in some special fields, it is often encountered that the quantity is small and the variety is large, so it is very advantageous to use rods, plates and other profiles for mechanical processing and manufacturing.

  • Fiber field

PEEK fiber (including monofilament) in industrial filter cloth, industrial brushes and other products. In the field of composites, the appeal of PEEK fiber lies in its thermoplastic and high temperature resistance. In addition to heat resistance, the attractiveness of industrial filter cloths and brushes lies in their chemical resistance and abrasion resistance.

  • Medical analysis equipment

Because PEEK is resistant to repeated autoclaving, it can be used in medical devices to make endoscope parts, dental detergents, etc. In addition, due to the high strength and low dissolution of PEEK, it has been used in liquid chromatography columns, tubes, accessories, etc. for instrumental analysis. Moreover, because PEEK has a good compatibility with the human body, it has successfully replaced the traditional titanium metal as an artificial bone material.
